Type in ‘ Mail’ in the search box and then highlight the app. 
Click on the Activity Monitor App to launch the utility.
Click on the Spotlight icon at the top right corner of your MacBook and type in Activity Monitor (image). If you are unable to force-quit the app using the dock icon ( Mail App does not respond), open the activity monitor. Start with force quitting the Mail App on your MacBook / Mac. If launching using the Applications folder did not resolve your issue, try quitting Mail and restarting the application while holding down the Shift key. If that works, you will need to clear the icon from the dock and then re-add it later.
